I voted for this story on Kindle Scout and it was selected for publication. It took a few tries for me to get into this book. Vivienne was a sheltered girl who lived with monks in a mountain. She was naive about many things due to her upbringing, but like most teens, she began to see the value of her upbringing throughout the book. Farren was an interesting character who did not act his age. Rowan was a puzzle. He was stoic and gorgeous, but his personality begins to wobble after other things are revealed (don't want to spoil anything). At times, he seemed to suffer from split personalities. I liked the other characters, though they were not all as developed as the main characters.
I thought the plot was well thought out. The written was good. Once Vivienne arrived home, the book sucked me in. It really begins to delve into the story. I liked how the author used "visions" to show what was happening in other places. There were a few plot twists that I didn't see coming, though some parts were predictable.
There were some editing issues that were not irritating because there weren't many of them. I had a hard time placing a time period for this book due to Vivienne's modern language. I would think that someone who's been sheltered with only monks would have a more formal speech. She spoke like modern teens (minus the word 'like' after every few words). There were a few other things that didn't seem to fit well in the story due to time period, or lack there of. I did not see the point of the adult scene. I understood the tension due to attraction and the whole connection/bond thing. But, why tarnish a good book with something that didn't fit and seemed unfinished. I do not recall reading any adult language. I was glad that I was not left hanging by the ending, but the eagerness to chase after the next problem was abrupt considering the damage that needed attending. I felt that considerable time should have passed before chasing after the next problem. Especially since the ruler of that world can control how long one stays in her world.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. This would have been a good novel for teens, otherwise.
Overall: 3 stars

Out of the Mountain eBook Violet Chastain Reviews
I loved this book! From the beginning the author does a great job of portraying her characters, and makes you care about what happens to them. I was sucked in from the first chapter, and didn't want to put it down. I cannot wait until the next story is released!
Got as a freebie & liked it so well I also bout the sequel. Very interesting characters, well told. Fascinating world and culture. Hokked me from the 1st chapter. Nice mix of fantasy, martial arts, elemental magic, romance & suspense.
Out of the Mountain (Royal Bloodlines #1) by Violet Chastain is a young adult novel. adult for sure. I was hoping it would be a fantasy with a bit of romance but it seemed to be more romance with a touch of fantasy. I liked it but it tested me at times. I liked the plot, characters were developed, but it didn't hold my interest the whole book. I would give it a 3 1/2 stars, rounding up to 4.
I enjoyed this novel very much. It's a bit of a new spin on an old idea. There's a blend of old concepts with new ones that makes the characters and storyline very compelling. I have gotten away from reading fantasy so much because it's either tedious or just a rehashing of the same ol' boring theme. This was new and fun.
I can't wait to hear what adventures await Vivienne and Rowan next.
This is the first book with a handful of grammatical errors I have ever rated 5 stars. Generally, finding an editing mistake would cause me to knock one or more stars off my rating. However, I was so taken with this story and the compelling voice coming through the writing that the few errors were ignored and forgiven.
Good pace, well-developed, fantasy genre storyline with enough suspense to keep the reader engaged. The story had a satisfying conclusion, with a peek into the next plotline to ensure the reader is looking forward to unraveling the upcoming adventure, while feeling at peace until book two is released.
After reading this book for free with prime reading, I purchased it and fully intend to purchase the second when it comes out.
Although not a genre I would normally read, by one third into this story I was entranced by it and completely enjoying not only reading about who the characters of the story were, but also watching the main characters go through such intense self-development. It is a story that I think could capture readers of all ages, and there is nothing in it that would make it unsuitable for even extremely young readers, whilst also having the maturity to hold a captive audience of an older reader. I eagerly look forward to reading the following up Royal Bloodlines novel, to read on about what happens next! Great writing, Violet, and congratulations on your success in Scout publication - well deserved!
Fantasy is one of my favorite genres, and so I enjoyed this story. A lot of fantasy are big on world building, to immerse the reader into a world not like their own. This story did give a bit about the social and political state in passing. However, I didn't get as much a sense of the world overall as I would have liked. The plot was more focused on Vivienne and her preparations for the battle that was to come... as well as her romantic interest in Rowan. Since it's YA/NA, you have to have that romantic interest. In that respect, it does shine.
The characters were each unique and easy to remember, each with flaws that made them more human. I did feel Vivienne acted rather childish initially for someone who had just turned 20. I would have expected someone more reserved or demure, since she'd been raised by monks away from other society. But for the most part, I liked her character and that of the others.
The plot was good. Good against evil. I liked the training of the guards, and the interactions among all of them. At times, parts of the story were a bit repetitive, and some dialog seemed written to inform the reader of event that the people talking would have already known.
In all, I think the YA/NA crowd will enjoy the story.
